CANADA TO HOST MEETING TO ADVANCE COOPERATION
PLAN TO FIGHT ORGANIZED CRIME AND TERRORISM IN AMERICAS

  April 28, 2003

The first hemispheric meeting of central authorities and government experts on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters will be held in Ottawa, Canada, from April 30 through May 2. The Canadian government and the Organization of American States are jointly co-hosting the conference.

During their gathering, the senior officials responsible for processing requests for mutual legal assistance in the 34 OAS member states will seek among other things to move forward in their efforts to draw up a hemispheric action plan for mutual legal assistance specifically related to combating organized transnational crime and terrorism.

Mutual legal assistance involves facilitating processes for requests to provide evidence in relation to criminal investigations.

Canada’s Minister of Justice, Martin Cauchon, will inaugurate the meeting that is being convened under a Summit of the Americas mandate and in keeping with recommendations from the Fourth Meeting of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Americas, held in Trinidad and Tobago in March 2002.

The conclusions of the meeting will be referred to the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General of the Americas for consideration at their fifth meeting, to be held in early 2004.
