REPUBLIC OF SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO GIVES TO OAS CARIBBEAN PROJECT
June 2, 2004
With a contribution the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro presented today, the Organization of American States (OAS) will boost its Caribbean Regional Secure Identities Project that helps member states modernize their civil registries and electoral records, among other areas of their national record-keeping.
Ambassador Ivan Vujacic, Luigi Einaudi, during a brief ceremony at OAS Headquarters. In presenting the donation towards the project, which is managed by the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy (UPD), Ambassador Vujacic said it was a modest contribution but an important gesture of Serbia and Montenegro’s support for building democracy. “It’s a gesture of goodwill,” he asserted, noting his own country’s efforts in strengthening democracy.
The OAS Assistant Secretary General stressed that this contribution was especially welcome and meaningful, “because civil registries are important both for electoral purposes but also for matters of simple justice, to enable every citizen to be recognized legally.” He said this gesture by Serbia and Montenegro will benefit countries of the English-speaking Caribbean.
Among others on hand for the ceremony was Dr. Bruce Rickerson, who manages the UPD’s Caribbean Regional Secure Identities Project.
