OAS to observe General Elections in the United States
October 29, 2024
The Organization of American States (OAS) is deploying an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the general elections of November 5 in the United States.
Led by OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, the EOM comprises 41 experts and observers from 14 countries, and will be deployed in California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The team will follow up on issues related to electoral organization and technology, postal voting, electoral justice, electoral boundaries, political-electoral financing, political participation of women, political participation of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants and campaigns, media and digital communication.
The Mission is meeting with electoral authorities, government officials, representatives of political parties and other relevant actors, to analyze the technical aspects of the process. Members of the Mission will also visit voting centers in the different states and in the District of Columbia to observe the early voting process. On election day, observers will be present at polling centers from the opening until the closing of the polls.
This is the third time that the OAS has observed an electoral process in the United States. Following the election, and in keeping with its mandate to support the strengthening of electoral processes, the Mission will issue a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations.
The OAS Mission in the United States is possible as a result of financial contributions from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Korea, Morocco, the Netherlands, and Panama.
