OAS ANTI-DRUG COMMISSIONERS TO MEET IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

  April 25, 2005

The President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, will inaugurate an Organization of American States (OAS) meeting of national anti-drug commissioners in that country tomorrow. The meeting of the OAS Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) will gather delegates from the 34 member nations to examine a wide range of issues including money laundering, drug treatment for offenders and the Third Evaluation Round of National and Hemispheric Reports of the Multilateral Evaluation Mechanism, known as MEM.

The MEM, which was mandated by the 1998 Summit of the Americas, is a systematic and collaborative effort carried out by each country to examine progress against illegal drugs on a national and hemispheric basis. CICAD commissioners are expected to review and approve the reports evaluating countries for the 2003-2004 period.

The four-day meeting will be led by the Chairman of CICAD, General José Aníbal Sanz Jiminián, Secretary of State and Chair of the National Drug Council of the Dominican Republic. It will also include presentations related to the aerial spraying program for coca and poppy control in Colombia, demand reduction initiatives, and human rights concerns in the context of the fight against drugs.
