THE OAS PROMOTES COOPERATION WITH CIVIL SOCIETY DURING WEEK OF EVENTS
March 6, 2008
The Organization of American States (OAS)will host a series of meetings, at its Washington headquarters, that during one week will promote the participation of civil society in the activities of the hemispheric body.
The initiative, sponsored by the OAS Secretariat of Summits of the Americas, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Political Affairs and the (IACH)Inter-American Commission on Human Rights , will bring together civil society organizations from across the hemisphere during several events March 10-14, with the objective of receiving their contributions regarding the most pressing issues of the inter-American agenda, such as the strengthening of democracy, the protection of human rights and the promotion of social development.
Cooperating with Civil Society will begin with the “Civil Society Hemispheric Forum: Youth and Democratic Values,” and will serve as an opportunity for dialogue among civil society representatives during two days where plenary sessions and roundtables will be held. During this event, recommendations and suggestions will be received to be used for the preparations of the next OAS General Assembly taking place in Medellin, Colombia in June.
The recommendations drafted during the Hemispheric Forum will be presented to the representatives of the OAS Member States on March 13 during a special meeting of a Permanent Council Committee. In this Committee, chaired by Ambassador Marina Valere of Trinidad and Tobago, a dialogue between the representatives of the State and Civil Society will also be included.
Talks between civil society and Member States will continue on March 13 and 14 when the OAS Permanent Council will hold two special meetings to discuss the issue of the role civil society in the strengthening of a democratic culture and in the promotion of human rights.
Cooperating with Civil Society is an initiative promoted by the Governments of Canada and the United States to promote the participation of a large number of civil society representatives and coincides with the 131 period of sessions of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACH). More information about the participation of civil society in the Organization of American States is available at the OAS Civil Society Website (www.civil-society.oas.org/).
