OAS Experts Mission Begins Second Visit to Honduras for Work on Electoral Reform

  November 12, 2018

Experts of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) today began a second visit to Honduras, in the framework of the agreement between the OAS General Secretariat and the Congress of the Republic to work on an electoral reform proposal.

During the previous visit from October 24 to 31, the experts held more than 20 meetings with political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral authorities, among other actors. On this occasion, the group of experts will hold new meetings with various actors to exchange information and impressions that contribute to the analysis being carried out about the electoral legislation in the country.

In December, the group of experts will deliver an electoral reform proposal to Congress that will take into consideration the observations and recommendations of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission deployed to the 2017 general elections.

These tasks, being carried out autonomously and independently, are part of the letter of understanding signed on October 15 between the OAS General Secretariat, represented by Secretary General Luis Almagro, and the National Congress of the Republic of Honduras, represented by its President, Mauricio Oliva.
