OAS General Secretariat Welcomes New Electoral Authorities of Honduras

  September 12, 2019

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) has collaborated with the National Congress of Honduras on electoral reforms through a group of experts and welcomes the appointment of the authorities that will lead the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Electoral Court of Justice (TJE).

In both the CNE and the TJE, two of the three leaders are women, something that we highlight as an advance in the participation of Honduran women in positions of power.

The new bodies created through the constitutional reform of the beginning of the year, which was one of the main recommendations of the group of experts, and the appointment of their authorities, are important steps in promoting better elections in Honduras. The General Secretariat expects to collaborate closely with the elected councilors and magistrates for the construction and consolidation of these two new institutions.

The approval of pending electoral laws must now be the priority, to provide certainty and ensure that future elections are free, fair and transparent.
