OAS and California Western School of Law Sign Cooperation Agreement
March 4, 2015
The Organization of American States (OAS) and California Western School of Law signed today at the headquarters of the hemispheric Organization in Washington, DC a cooperation agreement that aims to establish a general cooperation mechanism in academic activities, through the promotion of international law and the Inter-American system.
The Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Albert Ramdin, who signed the agreement on behalf of the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, said the signing of the agreement seeks to promote cooperation between the two institutions in areas such as legal cooperation projects; joint training activities; and exchanges of experiences and best practices; and therefore he added that the ideal partner within the OAS will be the Department of International Law. "This department plays a key role as legal advisor to the main organs that participate in the elaboration of international norms and also holds the historic memory of legal processes at the OAS," he said.
Ambassador Ramdin also recalled that the Department of International Law organizes courses and capacity building activities for representatives from member states and members of civil society in areas such as international humanitarian law, refugee law, migration and international norms against discrimination regarding people with disabilities, Afro-descendants and indigenous peoples. It has already conducted several workshops promoting international law and the Inter-American System in Mexico and Canada.
For his part, the President of the California Western School of Law, Niels Schaumann, said the study center that he directs has extensive experience working with Latin America and expressed his conviction that the signing of the agreement with the OAS will open many opportunities to tackle new projects in the coming years. "That's why I'm more than delighted to be here today," added President Schaumann.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the Mission of the United States to the OAS.
