OAS Participates in Inauguration of World Forum on Consumer Product Security
February 28, 2012
The Director of the Department of Social Development and Employment of the Organization of American States (OAS), Evelyn Jacir de Lovo, who intervened as principal orator at the inaugural ceremony of the 19th Annual Meeting and Training Symposium of the International Consumer Product Health and Security Organization (ICPHSO), highlighted that in today’s world “because we live in a dynamic and constantly changing market, the issue of consumer product security and its impact on health should be addressed through global and coordinated initiatives.”
In her presentation at said event, being held in Orlando, Florida, from February 28 to March 2, the OAS official highlighted the need to have “an urgent multisectorial and global response for the security of products and the health of consumers.” Also, she offered an overview of the current situation in the hemisphere and praised efforts developed by OAS Member State in recent years on the subject, among them the implementation of the Safe and Healthy Consumption for the Americas Network (RCSS), which constitutes the first inter-American effort to contribute to the creation and spread of safe practices of consumer products in the region; and the projection in the region of an Inter-American System of Rapid Alerts.
The RCSS arose as a result of the commitment of the OAS Member States with the effective guardianship of the rights of consumers, and the promotion of safe consumption. The Network is coordinated by the OAS Department of Social Development and Employment in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and has as its main objective to contribute to the effective exercise of democracy, to guarantee the wellbeing and health of people through informed consumption and the freedom to elect safe services and goods.
The ICPHSO Annual Symposium is recognized as one of the most prominent events for professionals in the area of product consumer safety around the world. It serves as a channel to spread current information in the field of product consumer safety, and brings together all the key actors involved in the subject, including regulators, retailers, manufacturers, consumers, test normalization organizers, researchers, lawyers, and consultants, among others.
