OAS’ INSULZA HAILS U.S. CONGRESS FOR EXTENDING PREFERENTIAL TARIFFS FOR ANDEAN COUNTRIES

  February 29, 2008

Organization of American States Secretary General José Miguel Insulza has welcomed the move by the United States Congress to approve an extension of Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) granting preferential tariffs to Andean countries.

According to Insulza, since entering into force in 1991 the ATPDEA has more than quadrupled exports from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to the United States, providing jobs and promoting prosperity for thousands of citizens in these tour countries, while bringing greater effectiveness to drug eradication programs wherever they are in operation.

The recent approval of the United States-Peru Free Trade Agreement is the latest substantive development in trade ties between Andean countries and the United States. “We hope that before this latest extension expires at year-end, the United States Congress would approve the free trade pact already negotiated by the US administration with Colombia, and that negotiations to deepen trade relations with Bolivia and Ecuador can also move forward, to help our citizens and promote closer relations between the countries of the Americas,” said Insulza. “These developments altogether serve to strengthen democracy and promote justice, security and prosperity—essential goals of this Organization.”

The Secretary General has also expressed appreciation to the Unites States Congress for this positive decision, and particularly to the Representatives and Senators that have made this possible through their hard work and understanding.
