Permanent Council Postpones OAS General Assembly until October 2020

  May 13, 2020

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today approved - by consensus and in a virtual meeting - the postponement until October 2020 of its fiftieth regular session of the General Assembly in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The approved resolution is available here.

The General Assembly is the most important annual meeting of the OAS and takes place in the middle of the year. Despite postponing the event, the Council installed the Preparatory Commission in order to come to agreement on the theme of the Assembly and other aspects related to the preparations for the meeting.

The Council also instructed the General Secretariat to present the OAS program-budget for 2021, as well as the tentative overall budget level for 2022, for consideration by the General Assembly.

Likewise, the Council instructed the General Secretariat to prepare a contingency plan in the event that it should prove necessary to hold the Assembly virtually, whether completely or partially. The exact date of the General Assembly will be decided by the Council at least 60 days before October.
