OAS Electoral Observation Mission begins deployment in Mexico for July 1st elections

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) to the federal and local elections that will be held on July 1st in Mexico began its deployment in the country with the arrival of the team of experts, who today observe the simulation of the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP).

Headed by former Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez , the Mission is comprised of more then 60 experts and observers of 23 countries who will carry out a substantive analysis of the electoral process in terms of electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, electoral justice, political participation of women, electoral security and participation of indigenous peoples.

The Mission will deploy in different states of the country to gather information on the development of the electoral process and to observe the vote on election day, when the Mexican people will elect more than 18.000 positions. In the run up to the election, the Chief of Mission and the technical team will meet with electoral and government authorities, political parties, candidates, social society representatives, and members of the international community, amongst others.

This will be the fourth Mission the OAS deploys to Mexico, after having observed the federal elections of 2009 and 2015, and the 2012 local elections.
