RAMDIN CALLS FOR CONCRETE ACTION AT V SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS
February 17, 2009
Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin called for solid initiatives that will improve the lives of the peoples of the Americas. He made these remarks today at OAS Headquarters while addressing the 12th OAS Policy Roundtable on “Promoting Environmental Sustainability in the Americas”.
“We have several key Declarations, and while they all remain significant milestones and a testament to cooperation and the value of consensus, it is equally important and timely for concrete action to tackle the many challenges in the Western Hemisphere, including those faced by the small and vulnerable member states. Hopefully, political leaders attending the V Summit of the Americas will not only reiterate the principles and parameters that guide us, but would also focus on concrete action and targeted measures to address critical issues such as the financial crisis, environmental degradation, poverty and crime” Ramdin said to the audience. In that regard, he emphasized the importance of having sound technical, institutional and financial capacity.
Assistant Secretary General Ramdin also expressed the view that “one of the most effective ways the Western Hemisphere can respond to existing challenges is with a holistic approach that considers the technical, social, economic, security and political aspects. Therefore, we need to develop partnership with civil society, the private sector and trade unions in member states to foster development.”
The V Summit of the Americas will be held from 17-19 April 2009 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and all democratically elected Heads of States and Government of the 34 active OAS member states are expected to attend.
