Statement of the OAS General Secretariat on Nicaragua
June 20, 2019
Having fulfilled the 90 days provided for the release of political prisoners in Nicaragua, in the framework agreed at the negotiation table between the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy and the Government of the country, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) -in its capacity as witness and companion in said process- understands the following assessments to be pertinent:
The OAS General Secretariat:
1) Welcomes the release of political prisoners and the fact that the agreements have allowed these people to rejoin their families.
2) Points out that the complete release of these prisoners is imperative, as is the closing of legal cases brought against these persons and for those who had to leave the country as a result of the events that began on April 18, 2018.
3) Reiterates that the existence of political prisoners is incompatible with democracy and the rule of law and requests the release of every person imprisoned for political reasons, regardless of the time of his or her arrest or the cover of their case file. Without this, it will not be possible to recover the path of democracy, peace and justice in the country.
4) Expresses the urgent need to fully restore freedoms in Nicaragua, including the right to life, freedom, free expression, the right of association and demonstration, among others.
5) Reaffirms its willingness to continue working so that Nicaragua and Nicaraguans can find the future of democracy, peace, justice, truth, non-repetition and prosperity that they deserve.
