RAMDIN VISITS ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA ON PRE-ELECTION MISSION

  February 17, 2009

Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States visited Antigua and Barbuda to prepare for an OAS observation mission for upcoming general elections. “This will be the first time the OAS will deploy an election observer mission to Antigua and Barbuda and we hope to be able to visit all 151 polling stations in the 17 constituencies of the country.”

During his visit, the OAS Assistant Secretary General called on political parties to reject violence and refrain from personal attacks on candidates. He urged the Government to ensure equitable access of state media and appealed to citizens to desist from destroying campaign materials. “Antigua and Barbuda has a long tradition of democracy and a recently-reformed electoral process which should guarantee everyone their fundamental right to vote, free from fear and intimidation,” asserted Ramdin.

He also suggested that the Electoral Office confirm the accuracy of the voters list by cross checking with other databases and clarify any perceived ambiguities regarding the modification of constituent boundaries.

Ambassador Ramdin was accompanied on the mission by Steven Griner of the OAS Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation, who will serve as Deputy Chief of Mission, and Cecily Norris, the OAS Representative in Antigua and Barbuda.

During its visit, the Mission met with Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, Leader of the Opposition Lester Bird, members of political parties, the Supervisor of Elections and leaders from civil society, the private sector, trade unions, religious organizations, domestic observer groups and the media.
