OAS Recognizes the Guatemalan Marimba as Cultural Heritage of the Americas

  February 13, 2015

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, delivered the distinction "Cultural Heritage of the Americas" to the Guatemalan government, in honor of the marimba, the national instrument of the country, at a ceremony held Thursday in the Hall of the Americas, at the headquarters of the institution in Washington, DC.

In the presence of Minister of Culture and Sports of Guatemala, Dwith Pezzarossi; the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marta Estrada; the Deputy Minister of Culture, Clariza Castellanos; and other authorities and representatives of the diplomatic corps, Secretary General Insulza said that this recognition corresponds to expressions of culture rooted in daily lives and feelings that become identified with a country and its people. Thus, as happened four years ago with Peruvian cuisine, the OAS has identified a perfect symbiosis between the art of marimba and the people of Guatemala.

Prior to the ceremony, which concluded with a marimba concert, Secretary General Insulza held a bilateral meeting with Minister Pezzarossi, in which both highlighted the importance of the instrument in the cultural heritage of Guatemala and the peoples of the region.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister Estrada, Deputy Minister Castellanos, the Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the OAS, José María Argueta, the Chief of Staff of the OAS Secretary General, Hugo de Zela, and the OAS Secretary for External Affairs, Alfonso Quiñonez.
