Joint Statement

  May 31, 2018

It is public knowledge that, in the framework of the work underway between the Government of Nicaragua and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), one of the priorities is the reform of the electoral system and the generation of the mechanisms needed in this sense.

On this point, the OAS General Secretariat and the Government of Nicaragua have been working on aspects related to the configuration and composition of the Supreme Electoral Council as a fundamental institutional support for electoral guarantees and for free, fair, democratic and transparent elections.

The Government of Nicaragua, reiterating its willingness to continue working for the strengthening of institutions, confirms the resignation of the President of the Supreme Electoral Council, Dr. Roberto Rivas, and is awaiting the decisions that, according to the law, correspond to the National Assembly.

The decision of the Government of Nicaragua on the path to improving the electoral system is appreciated by the OAS General Secretariat as a sign in the direction of the restoration of trust and democratic harmony in the country.
