OAS Electoral Mission in Panama Begins Deployment for General Elections
April 24, 2024
The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the general elections in Panama, headed by the former Foreign Minister of Argentina Susana Malcorra, today began its deployment in the country for the elections on Sunday, May 5.
The OAS Mission, which will arrive in the country in stages, is made up of 70 experts and observers from 19 countries and will analyze issues related to electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, political-electoral financing, political participation of women, participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, and campaigns, media and communication.
During its work in Panama, the Mission will meet with government representatives, electoral authorities, leaders and candidates and representatives of civil society and academia, as well as members of the international community to learn about the ongoing electoral process. On election day, the Mission will be deployed throughout Panamanian territory, from the installation of the voting centers to the closing and transmission of results. At the end of its observation, the OAS will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations.
In relation to what happened yesterday, April 23, with the modality of early voting online, the OAS Mission takes note of the inconveniences presented and highlights that, despite the problems, people registered in this modality continue to exercise their right to vote. The OAS Mission considers that, given the context of the electoral contest, clear and precise institutional communication by the authorities is essential.
This is the twelfth time that the OAS has sent an electoral mission to Panama, and it is possible thanks to the financial contributions of Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Spain, United States, Italy, Netherlands, Peru, Dominican Republic and Switzerland.
