OAS Presents New Donation to Support Haitian Victims

  January 29, 2010

As part of its ongoing efforts to mobilize resources and help bring major relief to the people of Haiti, the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, today handed a check to the Executive Director of the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), Mr. John Sanbrailo, for funds raised at a Haiti Fundraiser event he organized last Friday, January 22. Also present at the ceremony was OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza.

The check for 30,000 dollars came from a special fundraising reception that took place in the Hall of the Americas at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C. The event was supported by contributions from the Haiti Group of Friends, OAS leadership, Haitian diplomats, policymakers and representatives of international organizations. The contribution will be used to support relief efforts for the victims of the earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday, January 12.

“We are very pleased to see this enormous outpouring of support for Haiti, and the Pan American Development Foundation will be able to multiply this and leverage this with the private sector contributions and ultimately this will benefit the people of Haiti,” Assistant Secretary General Ramdin said.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Ramdin also recalled some of the many challenges the Haitian population is facing today and asserted that after his recent visit to the country he was able to asses that, “while there are important physical and structural damages, the human tragedy is even worse and we will have to pay a lot of attention to collective and individual counseling of Haitians so that they can overcome this trauma in their lives.”

For his part, Secretary General Insulza highlighted the commitment the international community has made to help the victims of the earthquake.

PADF Executive Director John Sanbrailo thanked the OAS and commented that “the magnitude of this disaster has no precedent and we know that the Haitian people are going to need so much help. For that reason, the leadership of the Organization of American States and the employees and the institution itself are going to be absolutely critical.”

Sanbrailo also highlighted OAS support by saying that “this expression of hemispheric solidarity has exceeded what we all expected from this fundraising event, and it is a real expression of the commitment and dedication that the employees themselves as well as the institutions have had in this period of time.”
