OAS to Seek to Achieve Gender Parity

  March 12, 2020

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved a resolution calling on the Organization to take measures to achieve gender parity.

The Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), Alejandra Mora Mora, highlighted the spirit of the resolution that places the OAS at the forefront of organizations seeking to implement policies in favor of gender equality. “We welcome the relevance of an active and accelerated diplomacy for equality. The OAS has the people, the context and the strategy to further accelerate the women´s agenda,” said Mora Mora.

For his part the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro expressed his full commitment to women´s rights. “Achieving parity in the OAS, which is what this resolution aims at, has a value in and of itself, but it is also instrumental: we must lead by example and to do so we will back parity in the hemisphere from an OAS with parity," said the Secretary General.

The resolution approved by acclamation by member states also reiterates its “condemnation of the multiple forms of discrimination and violence against women in the Hemisphere.”
