Preliminary Visit of the Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS to Ecuador

The Chief of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Ecuador, Rafael Alburquerque, who was designated for the task by the Secretary General of the hemispheric institution, José Miguel Insulza, began this week a visit to the country ahead of presidential and legislative elections to be held on February 17.

The former Vice President of the Dominican Republic signed, together with the Chair of the National Electoral Council of Ecuador, Domingo Paredes, the Agreement on Procedures which establishes the bases that guarantee the independence of the work of the OAS. As part of this visit, the Chief of Mission will also hold meetings with various political, electoral and governmental authorities, and with representatives of political parties, the international community and other civil society groups.

The EOM/OAS will observe the elections in accordance with the methodology applied in all countries in which it is deployed. In this context, it will observe various aspects of the electoral organization, including legal, technological, issues of gender and campaign finance, among others.
