OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Ecuador Observed Meetings between the CNE and Presidential Candidates

  February 9, 2021

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Ecuador was present today at the meetings held between the National Electoral Council (CNE, for its initials in Spanish) and the three presidential candidates with the possibility of moving to the second electoral round.

The OAS Mission welcomes the fact that these meetings have taken place between the electoral authority and the candidates, which were held following a recommendation issued yesterday by the Mission.

These exchanges, which took place in a cordial atmosphere, were an opportunity for the National Electoral Council to describe the actions it is carrying out in this post-electoral stage. Likewise, the authority was open to hearing from the candidates and answering their doubts.

These meetings contribute to transparency and to building trust among the different actors in the electoral process. The Mission considers it important that direct communication be kept open during the remainder of the electoral process.

For her part, the Chief of Mission, Isabel de Saint Malo, informed the candidates that she will maintain observers deployed in the provinces of Pichincha, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Manabí until the official count is completed.
