Message from the Chief of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Ecuador

  February 8, 2021

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Ecuador today held a productive meeting with the members of the National Electoral Council to learn about the next steps in this post-electoral stage.

The Mission highlighted the importance of carrying out the proceedings underway with total transparency and in accordance with the law. Providing information in a fluid and timely manner to the candidates in contention is crucial.

The Mission also recommended holding individual meetings with the presidential candidates with the opportunity to pass to the second round, so they receive information firsthand and can establish a direct line of communication that allows them to voice concerns. Communication between the candidates and the electoral authority in this phase is fundamental to provide certainty to all the participants and to the citizenry.

As a Mission, we have made the provisions for a technical team to remain on the ground until the official count is completed.
