OAS SECRETARY GENERAL HOPEFUL BECAUSE OF RELEASE OF
TWO COLOMBIAN HOSTAGES

  January 10, 2008

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said that the release of Clara Rojas and Consuelo González de Perdomo, who were held captive by the Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia (FARC), “is a first and encouraging step towards the resolution of the humanitarian issue facing Colombia.” Insulza praised the efforts undertaken by the governments of Colombia and Venezuela as well as the Humanitarian Commission comprising Venezuelan minister Ramón Rodríguez Chapín and delegates of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The Secretary General expressed confidence that this development “would be the beginning of a new era in which it would be possible for a humanitarian exchange to result in the release of all hostages.” Furthermore, Insulza reiterated that “the OAS stands ready to provide assistance within the context of its commitment to the peace process in Colombia.”
