OAS Mission in Ecuador Begins Activities ahead of February 5 Elections

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Sectional Elections, Election of Councilors of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS), Referendum 2023 and Popular Consultation for the Creation of the Sevilla Don Bosco Canton which will take place on February 5 in Ecuador, began its activities on Friday.

The Mission is headed by the Uruguayan sociologist Juan Pablo Corlazzoli. Corlazzoli has led OAS Electoral Observation Missions to the Paraguayan municipal elections in 2021, the 2019 presidential elections and the 2018 legislative and municipal elections in El Salvador, and the 2015 general elections in Guatemala.

The Mission is made up of 20 experts and observers from 9 countries who will analyze in detail issues related to organization, technology, electoral justice, and direct democracy, among others. Members of the Mission will meet with government representatives, electoral authorities, political leaders and candidates, academics and representatives of civil society. On election day, the Mission will be deployed in six provinces of Ecuador to observe the voting process.

This is the 23rd Mission that the OAS has deployed in Ecuador, and it is possible thanks to financial contributions from Canada, South Korea, the United States, the Netherlands, and Peru.

After the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations to support the strengthening of electoral processes in Ecuador.
