INSULZA WELCOMES PARDON GRANTED BY CHAVEZ TO POLITICAL PRISONERS

  January 2, 2008

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today hailed the decision taken by the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, to grant amnesty to a group of persons convicted or being prosecuted for political crimes.

Highlighting that the decree covers persons who participated in events carried out directly against his government, such as the April 2002 coup, Insulza noted that President Chávez’s gesture demonstrates his resolve to leave differences and offenses in the past, and aims towards national reconciliation and peace, which are essential goals of democracy.

“I hope that in the New Year, Venezuela and all countries of the region continue on the path of democratic progress, leave differences aside and join in achieving our common objectives,” concluded Insulza.
