Statement from the OAS General Secretariat on the arbitrary detention in Venezuela of Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo
January 3, 2025
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) repudiates and condemns the arbitrary detention by the Venezuelan regime of the agent of the Argentine National Gendarmerie Nahuel Gallo.
The case of Gendarme Gallo constitutes a crime against humanity according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The arbitrary detention of Gallo is a clear violation of international norms and fundamental principles of humanity and justice that all States must respect. The incommunication and denial of consular and legal assistance represent a direct violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. These facts are further proof of the systematic violation of fundamental human rights by the Venezuelan regime.
The OAS General Secretariat demands that the Venezuelan regime comply with international human rights and international relations treaties and agreements; certify and guarantee his physical safety; provide guarantees of legal assistance and contact with his family; and immediately release Nahuel Gallo.
