January 16, 2020
The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) to the special congressional elections in Peru began its deployment for the January 26 elections.
Former Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga will lead the team made up of 35 experts and observers from 16 countries that will deploy to the various regions of the country to learn about the development of the process in all its phases. The specialists will carry out a substantive analysis of various key aspects: electoral organization, electoral technology, the political participation of women, the participation of indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants, political financing and electoral justice.
The Mission will meet with electoral and governmental authorities, representatives of the political parties involved in the elections, academics, and representatives of civil society to hear their perspectives on the process. After the elections, the Mission will deliver a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations.
This is the twentieth mission the OAS has deployed in Peru. On this occasion, the Mission has been possible thanks to financial contributions from Bolivia, South Korea, the United States, France, Guatemala, the Netherlands and Morocco.
