CIM ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF THE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST “WHEN I GROW UP…”

  November 10, 2008

As part of the commemoration of it’s 80th anniversary, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), with the support of the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the OAS, organized from August 1st to September 15th, 2008 a photography contest entitled: “When I Grow Up…”, targeted to 11 to 14 year old girls from OAS Member States.

The winners of the contest are: Carol Geraldine Moron a12 year-old from Peru, who obtained the first place with the series: “No to Domestic Violence”; the second place was shared by Rosa María Fabián a 12 year-old from Dominican Republic with the series “Helps” and Sarah Elisa Abendanon, a 14 year-old from Suriname who used the theme: “Environmental Message”.

The contest, with the participation of over 290 girls from 22 countries, was aimed to capture the girls’ dreams and professional ambitions, and to give them an opportunity to portray their ideas of how the world would be when they reach adulthood.

Through images, the participants illustrated how new generations assess the progress achieved by women regarding their role in society; and the challenges they will be facing when they grow up. The images depicted in the photographs included compelling messages referring to the girls’ life. Some of them referred to issues such as domestic violence or poverty, and most of them expressed the desire to help to improve life conditions in their families and communities. The girls’ choice of professions reflected their ideals of working for others, those included: teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, social workers, veterinarians, among many others.

The prizes for the winners are: $500 dollars for the first place, and $250 dollars for the two runners-up. Each of the ten special commendations will receive a prize of $50 dollars. The official announcements of the winners will be presented by the CIM President during the Thirty-Fourth Assembly of CIM Delegates to be held on November 10-12, 2008 in Santiago, Chile.
