OAS Co-organizes Second Latin American Democracy Forum in Mexico City from December 5 to 8
November 16, 2011
The Second Latin American Democracy Forum, a space for discussion and dialogue on the current and future problems faced by democracies in the region, will be held December 5 to 8, 2011, in the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildelfonso in Mexico City, organized by the Organization of American States (OAS), Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), and International IDEA.
Among confirmed participants are renowned politicians and diplomats such as Felipe Calderón, President of Mexico; José Miguel Insulza, OAS Secretary General; Martín Torrijos, former President of Panama; Carlos Mesa, former President of Bolivia; Luis Castiglioni, former Vice President of Paraguay; María Paula Romo, Congresswoman from Ecuador; Otilia Lux de Coti, Congresswoman from Guatemala; Marcelo Ebrard, Head of Government of Mexico City; Bill Richardson, former Governor of New Mexico; as well as journalists, academics, and experts on the subject.
The thematic axes that will provide a frame to the Forum, titled, “Politics, Money and Power,” are money and its relation to politics, power, the State, governance, and development; financing and its relation to politics, political parties, the media, and social inequality; and the crisis of legitimacy of democracies. Within this structure, there will be eight sessions of dialogue and three magisterial lectures, as well as an opening session and a closing session with conclusions.
The gathering also will provide the space for the presentation of “Politics, Money and Power: a Dilemma for Democracy,” a report elaborated by the OAS on the relation between politics and money in a democratic system and how the link between them can lead to significant distortions causing the inadequate use of political funds and the loss of social trust in democracy.
