OAS and UN Organize Training in Peru on Dialogue and Mediation
November 11, 2011
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the General Secretariat of the United Nations (UN) will organize from November 13 to 15, 2011, in Lima, Peru, a sub-regional training event titled, “Design and Implementation of Processes of Dialogue and Mediation,” in which more than 20 government officials from the countries of the Andean region and Paraguay will participate, including ministries and state agencies in charge of managing or following up on political, social, and economic problems.
The main objective of the course is to strengthen the institutional capabilities of the OAS Member States to provide effective answers to social problems and promote a culture of respect, tolerance and harmony. It is hoped that participants will gain practical skills and competencies for the analysis, identification of techniques and design of processes of dialogue and mediation.
OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza recalled that the organization’s efforts in this area are oriented towards “strengthening initiatives aimed at education for peace, forming social values and practices that seek to resolve conflicts of a political, economic or social nature through dialogue, respect for differences and cooperation.”
This initiative is promoted by the Department of Democratic Sustainability and Special Missions (DSDSM) of the Secretariat for Political Affairs of the OAS as part of its efforts to strengthen the management of dissent within the rule of law, increase respect for human rights, and contribute to strengthen a democratic culture in the region.
