The event, titled, “Best Practices on Civil Registration: Promoting Social Inclusion,” will feature the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Albert Ramdin; the Minister of Finance, Planning, Economy, Energy and Cooperatives of Grenada, Nazim Burke; as well as high-level United Nations officials. The event will start with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 27.
This gathering seeks to strengthen cooperation among Caribbean states to establish a Regional Action Plan for the modernization of civil registry institutions. Such modernization is essential in strengthening democratic governance, promoting social inclusion and fostering development in the region.
The event is sponsored jointly by the OAS with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development and Cooperation, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It is the first of its kind in the Caribbean region and is part of a wider initiative of the OAS Secretariat for Political Affairs, Department for Effective Public Management’s Civil Identity Program in the Americas (PUICA).
PUICA, with more than 10 years of experience, supports OAS Member States in their efforts to eradicate under-registration, therefore promoting the right to identity of people in the region.
