OAS, IACHR Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression and UNESCO to Commemorate International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), together with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE) and UNESCO are organizing a series of events between November 2 and 3 at OAS headquarters in Washington DC., to commemorate “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists” and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the RELE.
During the two-day event, media professionals, representatives of civil society, academia, OAS member states and observers will reflect on the topic: "Violence against journalists, the integrity of elections and the role of public leadership."
The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 2 at 09:10 EDT (13:10 GMT) in the Hall of the Americas with the intervention of the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro and the Assistant Director General for Communication and Information of UNESCO, Tawfik Jelassi. Immediately afterwards, the first panel will begin under the topic: “Safety of journalists in elections and crisis contexts: risks to democracies.”
At 16:30 EDT (20:00 GMT), a memorial in honor of the journalists murdered in the hemisphere will be presented at the Art Museum of the Americas, created by the Argentine-American artist Stephanie Mercedes, which will be located in the Garden of Poets, at the main headquarters of the OAS.
On Friday, November 2 at 15:45 EDT (19:45 GMT) in the Rubén Darío Hall, the 25 years of the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression will be celebrated. The event will review its history, main achievements and pending challenges, considering the fundamental role it plays in the defense and promotion of the right to freedom of expression in the hemisphere.
