CICAD/OAS to Host Demand Reduction Expert Group Meeting

The Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will host from September 27 to 29, 2011, the XIII Demand Reduction Expert Group Meeting at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
The meeting - "Enhancing Community Participation in Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, Rehabilitation and Social Integration in the Hemisphere" - will address four specific issues: community engagement strategies, information systems as essential elements for the planning of actions and policies on demand reduction, driving under the influence of drugs, and prevention of the abuse of prescription drugs.
The inaugural session (at 9:00 EDT, 13:00 GMT on Tuesday 27) will feature the United States Director of National Drug Control Policy, Gil Kerlikowske; the Chair of the Demand Reduction Expert Group and Deputy Director for Demand Reduction of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, David K. Mineta; the Vice Chair of the Demand Reduction Expert Group and National Secretary on Drug Policy of Brazil, Paulina do Carmo Arruda Vieira Duarte; the OAS Secretary for Multidimensional Security, Adam Blackwell; and CICAD’s Executive Secretary, Paul Simons.
During the forty-ninth regular session of the CICAD, held in May 2011, it was agreed that the Chairmanship for this group for the period 2011-2012 would be exercised by the United States, and the Vice Chairmanship by Brazil.
