OAS Promotes SME Competitiveness and Productivity in the Caribbean
September 6, 2011
The Organization of American States (OAS) is holding a workshop this Tuesday and Wednesday, September 6 and 7, 2011, in San Diego, California, to promote competitiveness and productivity among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Caribbean.
The Workshop, titled, “Promoting and Improving SME Competitiveness and Productivity in the Caribbean” will bring together more than 50 high-level government officials, private sector organizations and academics from all CARICOM countries and the Dominican Republic to discuss support programs for SMEs, a priority sector for countries in the region. It is organized by the OAS Department of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism and the Caribbean Export Development Agency, in cooperation with the United States Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) and the Regional SBDC of the University of Texas at San Antonio, with funding from the U.S. Government through the U.S. Mission to the OAS.
The event is being held in the framework of the ASBDC Annual Conference, which brings together over 1,800 representatives from the US SBDCs, as well as representatives from SME support institutions from Latin American countries such as Chile, El Salvador, and Mexico. Participants will exchange best practices on programs that support, assist and train SMEs with an emphasis on innovative government-business-academia partnerships, including the US SBDC model and its adoption and adaptation in Mexico and Central America.
