OAS and WFP to Launch Report on Central American Migration

  November 18, 2021

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will launch the report “Chartering a New Regional Course of Action. The Complex Motivations and Costs of Central American Migration” on Tuesday, November 23 at 9:00 EST (14:00 GMT).

The opening of the event will include the participation of the Executive Director of the WFP, David Beasley; the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Mauricio Claver-Carone; and the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro.

The report explores the factors that drive people in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to consider and decide to migrate irregularly or regularly, as well as the costs and economic implications of migration for households and communities in the region. Key findings and recommendations of the joint report will be presented at the event.

As a result of the collaboration between the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), the WFP, and the Civic Data Design Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with the support of the OAS and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the report also includes key recommendations to address the root causes of migration.
