OAS Organizes Workshops Aimed at Indigenous Leaders in Central America
June 12, 2011
The Organization of American States (OAS) is organizing two training workshops between June 14 and 22, 2011, in Antigua, Guatemala, directed at indigenous leaders in Central America: a Workshop on a Logistics Framework for project development and another on the Political Participation of Indigenous Women.
Both workshops are coordinated by the OAS Department of International Law, and indigenous representatives from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama are invited to attend.
The Logistics Framework Workshop seeks to collaborate with the efforts of indigenous communities in the search for funds to implement development projects based on their specific needs. The classes are taught by officials from the Department of International Law. The Workshop on the Political Participation of Indigenous Women is intended to strengthen the leadership of this sector of the population, promoting increased participation in the building of citizenship. The classes are taught by experts from different countries and officials from the OAS Department for Effective Public Management and the Department of International Law.
The workshops are part of the “Program of Action to Strengthen the Participation of Indigenous Peoples in the Inter-American System,” through which scholarships are awarded to participants, who are mainly indigenous representatives appointed by their communities, as well as members of NGOs and government officials that work with indigenous communities. Both initiatives are funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ), by order of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
