OAS, UN and Council of Europe Authorities to Discuss Challenges to Eliminate Violence against Women and Girls

The Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will host on Tuesday, November 7, a debate on the main challenges faced by regional and international monitoring mechanisms in their efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread violations of human rights globally.

The panel titled: “Regional and International Mechanisms for a comprehensive approach addressing Violence against Women and Girls,” is held within the framework of the International month for the Elimination of Violence against Women, that is celebrated on November 25. The event is part of the activities carried out by the CIM as Technical Secretariat of the Follow-up Mechanism for the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women (MESECVI).

The debate will be opened by the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro and headed by:

  • The UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Dubravka Šimonović,
  • The Vice President of the Committee of Experts of the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI) of the OAS, Sylvia Mesa, and
  • The President of the Group of Experts of the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention and Fight against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO), Feride Acar.
