OAS, UNHCR and Honduras Launch New Regional Initiative to Protect Refugees and Reduce Number of Displaced Persons
October 25, 2017
The Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Government of Honduras will launch a new regional initiative this Thursday, October 26 in San Pedro Sula at 10:00 local time (16:00 GMT), to protect refugees and reduce the number of displaced persons.
The Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework (MIRPS, for its initials in Spanish) is a regional effort to address the complete cycle of displacement: from structural causes and solutions in countries of origin to the protection of persons in transit, to the integration and solutions in destination countries.
The presentation of the initiative will take place during a one-day conference in which experts will exchange lessons learned, best practices and challenges regarding refugees and displaced persons. The inauguration of the Conference will include the presence of the Secretary of State and General Coordinator of the Government of the Republic of Honduras, Jorge Ramón Hernández Alcerro; UNCHR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi; the Secretary for Access to Rights and Equity of the OAS, Mauricio Rands; and a video message from the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro.
