Center for Media Integrity of the Americas Organizes Forum “Exiled, not Silenced: Journalism under Siege”
September 15, 2022
The Center for Media Integrity of the Americas will organize the forum “Exiled, not Silenced: Journalism under Siege” on Monday, September 19 at 15:00 EDT (19:00 GMT) at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C.
In many cases, journalists today are the target of threats and harassment, and sometimes even victims of physical violence by state agents or organized crime groups. How is it possible to maintain standards of quality and integrity in the exercise of journalism from exile? The forum "Exiled, not Silenced: Journalism under Siege" aims to address the challenges and difficult conditions that journalists in exile must face to continue freely exercising the profession of reporting.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, will open the event, which will continue with an introduction by the Executive Director of the Center, John Feeley.
The event will include a conversation moderated by the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Pedro Vaca, with the participation of Mónica Baro, Carlos Fernando Chamorro, Boris Muñoz, y Luz Mely Reyes.
The Center for Media Integrity of the Americas is a new hub funded by voluntary donations to promote and support the practice of independent, non-interest affiliated journalism and social media production in the Americas.
Representatives of the media interested in attending the meeting in person must wear a face mask, keep safe distance whenever possible, and present an identity document and COVID- 19 vaccination card. Due to restrictions due to the pandemic, access to the press will be limited and spaces will be occupied strictly by order of arrival.
