OAS and Symantec to Present Cyber Security Report on June 2nd
May 28, 2014
The Organization of American States (OAS) will release, on June 2, the report “Cyber Security Trends in Latin America and the Caribbean,” which illustrates and analyzes cyber security and cyber crime tendencies in the region.
The report, produced in partnership with Symantec, will be presented at 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT) in Asunción, Paraguay, host to the 44th OAS General Assembly, which will take place from June 3 to 5 under the central theme “Development with Social Inclusion.” The document will include contributions from Microsoft, the Police Community of the Americas (AMERIPOL) and other organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC), and the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), as well as civil society and other partners in the private sector.
The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza is invited to speak at the opening of the event. In addition, the presentation of the report will feature opening remarks from David Ocampos, Executive Secretary of the National Secretariat of Information Technologies and Communication (SENATICS) of Paraguay; Francisco Javier Diaz Verón, Attorney General of Paraguay; Adam Blackwell, Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the OAS; and Cheri McGuire, Vice President for Global Government Affairs and Cybersecurity Policy for Symantec Corporation. Following the presentation, participants will take part in a news conference to be held at 17:00 local time (21:00 GMT).
In addition to the report, the event will also feature a presentation on cyber security efforts in Paraguay, a summary of the conclusions of the report, and a news conference.
Member states have identified the report, prepared by the OAS through its Secretariat for Multidimensional Security (SMS) and the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE), as one of the most valuable sources of information on the issue in the Americas. The document will pair technical data collected by Symantec and other partners with observations from member states about the frequency and character of threats to cyber security in their countries.
