The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, will headline the 7th lecture in the monthly Lecture Series of the Americas, scheduled for July 15 at the San Martin de Porres University in Lima, Peru. Insulza, former Chilean Interior Minister, who was elected to the top OAS post by the Hemisphere’s Foreign Ministers on May 2, 2005, will talk about "Hemispheric Integration: An Overview of Challenges and Perspectives."
An expert panel will convene following Insulza´s presentation, featuring Michael Shifter, Vice President for Policy at the Inter-American Dialogue, José Antonio García Belaunde, Advisor to the Andean Community of Nations, Rafael Roncagliolo of IDEA International, and Irene Klinger, Coordinator of the Lecture Series of the Americas at the OAS.
The Lecture Series of the Americas was created by the OAS Permanent Council, on an initiative of the Peruvian Government, to promote democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere by hosting monthly conferences with internationally known speakers on key issues of the hemispheric agenda, such as the strengthening of democracy, human rights, social development, hemispheric security and the fight against poverty. The 12 conferences scheduled for 2005 are being held thanks to a financial contribution from Peru’s San Martín de Porres University and support from the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the Hellenic Republic.
Former US President Jimmy Carter, Inter-American Development Bank President Enrique Iglesias, International Criminal Court President Phillipe Kirsch, Nobel Literature Laureate Derek Walcott of Saint Lucia, Former US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury John B. Taylor and the President of the Inter-American Press Association, Alejandro Miró Quesada have been keynote speakers at previous lectures.
OAS Secretary General Insulza will take questions from the media and the general public, immediately following his presentation. The conference will be broadcast live from the San Martin de Porres University in Lima, Peru.
