OAS to Host a Forum on Follow-up to the Sixth Summit of the Americas "Connecting the Americas: Advancing Partnerships for Action"
March 15, 2013
Nearly one year after the Sixth Summit of the Americas took place in Cartagena, Colombia in April 2012, the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold on Monday, March 18 the first forum with civil society and social actors focused on the implementation of the Summits process, entitled “Connecting The Americas: Advancing Partnerships For Action.”
The forum, which will bring together multi-sectoral experts and practitioners, will offer participants an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences, share knowledge, build networks and prepare reports on the status of the implementation of mandates from the Sixth Summit, and collectively develop proposals and recommendations for the consideration of OAS Member States.
The event will consist of a plenary session that will feature opening remarks from the government of Panama, the current Chair of the Summits process, a presentation on the Sixth Summit Program of Implementation, and a discussion with representatives of government, institutions of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG), and social actors, followed by thematic working groups to develop recommendations on the implementation and follow-up of the Summit.
The Summit of the Americas is the highest-level political forum in the hemisphere, bringing together the region’s leaders to discuss and propose solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the Americas. Civil society and other social actors provide input to and dialogue with OAS Member States on key Inter-American priorities, as well as partnering with Member States for the implementation of hemispheric agreements.
The forum is organized with the support of the governments of Canada and the United States. The agenda for the event is available here.
