INTER-AMERICAN CHILDREN’S INSTITUTE TO MEET IN WASHINGTON

  November 14, 2003

The Directing Council of the Inter-American Children’s Institute will meet at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Washington, D.C., next Monday and Tuesday.

Directing Council Chair Carmen Bergés will open the special session, with OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi scheduled to deliver the closing address.

The meeting will consider several reports and documents, including the Annual Report of the Director General of the Children’s Institute’s, Alejandro Bonasso; a study on the Best Interest of the Child and the Right to Education in the region; the Inter-American Cooperation Program for the Prevention and Remedy of Cases of International Abduction of Children by One of their Parents; and a progress report on the XIX Pan American Child Congress to be held in Mexico in 2004. Other agenda items include reforms to the Children’s Institute statutes and the 2005-2008 Strategic Plan.

The opening and closing sessions will be Webcast live (at www.oas.org), with simultaneous interpretation provided.
