Ceremony to Celebrate Designation of OAS Headquarters as a Historic Landmark
April 11, 2022
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, and the Director of the U.S. National Park Service, Charles F. Sams III, will unveil the plaque recognizing the Pan American Union Building -currently the OAS headquarters- as a National Historic Landmark at a ceremony to be held TOMORROW April 12 at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT) at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington, DC.
The Pan American Union Building, also known as the House of the Americas, was designed and built by architects Paul Cret and Albert Kelsey in the early 20th century. It was inaugurated on April 26, 1910 by then U.S. President William H. Taft, along with hemispheric leaders of the time.
The group of buildings, which also includes the Art Museum of the Americas, was built thanks to funding from Scottish-born American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
The U.S. Secretary of the Interior formalized the designation of the OAS building as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) on January 13, 2021. NHLs are historic properties that illustrate the heritage of the United States. Among the more than 2,600 buildings designated as NHLs in the United States are historic buildings, sites, structures, objects, and districts. Each represents a prominent aspect of American history and culture.
