NEGOTIATIONS ON OAS INDIGENOUS RIGHTS DECLARATION CONTINUE

The member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Monday will begin a round of negotiations to seek consensus on the draft American Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Indigenous representatives from more than 20 countries will participate in the three-day meeting, convened by an OAS Permanent Council working group that is preparing the draft American Declaration.

At the opening session, at 9:30 a.m. Monday, the delegates will be addressed by OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi and the working group’s Chairman, Peruvian Ambassador Eduardo Ferrero Costa, as well as by an indigenous representative.

The meeting will focus on such issues as cultural identity, organizational and political rights, and health and labor rights, which are part of the American Declaration.
