PARAGUAY PRESIDENT FERNANDO LUGO TO ADDRESS OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL

  October 23, 2008

The President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo Méndez, will speak before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) at a Protocolary Meeting convened for next Tuesday, October 28th at 11:30 am.

Lugo will address various issues of his country’s political situation before the Permanent Representatives of the Organization’s 34 Member States, including foreign policy, inter-American relations and human rights.

This will be Lugo’s first appearance before the highest regional body since he took office on August 15, after winning the general elections on April 20. With his victory, Lugo, a former bishop in the Department of San Pedro, in Paraguay, put an end to the 61-year political rule of the Partido Colorado.

Previous to the Protocolary Meeting, President Fernando Lugo will meet with OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza. He will later be formally greeted by the 34 Ambassadors accredited to the hemispheric body.

The Permanent Council Meeting will be broadcast live at www.oas.org.
