HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION TO HOLD NEWS CONFERENCE

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will hold a news conference on Friday, at the end of its latest three-week session. In addition to holding hearings on petitions and individual cases, the Commission has considered issues of particular concern in the Americas, including freedom of expression, the rule of law and democratic governance, the freedom and safety of human rights defenders, and the strengthening of justice systems.

An autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Commission has been meeting since October 6 and has adopted reports on some 60 cases.

Commission President José Zalaquett and Executive Secretary Santiago Canton will discuss the results of the session.
