OAS to Officially Launch Inter-American Year of Culture

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Permanent Executive Committee of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CEPCIDI) will launch the Inter-American Year of Culture on Wednesday, March 23, in a joint session that will feature presentations by guest experts who will discuss the issue of culture and its relationships to other areas of public policy, such as civic education, the strengthening of democracy, economic development, job creation, the fight against poverty, and social inclusion.

The event will open with remarks by the Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of the United States to the OAS, Ambassador Carmen Lomellin, and will include remarks by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza as well as the Chair of CEPCIDI and Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, Ambassador Luis Alfonso Hoyos Aristizabal. Other presentations will be made by the Vice Chair of the Inter-American Committee on Culture and Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development and Culture of Barbados, Ms. Celia Toppin, and by the OAS Director of the Office of Education and Culture in the Department of Human Development, Lenore Yaffee García.

The session will also feature a presentation titled, “The Importance of Cultural Policies in the National Reality: The Ministry of Culture of Peru as a Vector of Development,” by Mr. Bernardo Roca-Rey, Vice Minister of Heritage and Cultural Industries in the Ministry of Culture of Peru, as well as one titled, “Culture and New Technologies as Means for Social Inclusion and Employment Generation,” by Mr. Carlos Argüello, Founder and Director of "Studio C" in Guatemala.
