OAS Co-organizes Meeting to Prepare for CARICOM - Canada Negotiations

  March 18, 2011

The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Department of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism, is co-organizing a meeting in Barbados to prepare for the next CARICOM – Canada round of negotiations, to be held April 4 to 8 in Ottawa. The meeting of CARICOM countries will be held March 21 to 25.

The meeting of the CARICOM Technical Working Group on Services and Investment will review the recently concluded report, “Statistics on Trade in Services between Canada and CARICOM States,” which was commissioned by the Office of Trade Negotiations (OTN) of the CARICOM Secretariat with the support of the OAS. Furthermore, it will discuss the nexus between innovation and investment, and address the outstanding issues related to the negotiations.

Ambassador Gail Mathurin, the region’s top trade negotiator and Director General of the OTN, commented on the significance of the negotiations. “Our trade agreement with Canada, CARIBCAN, deals with goods only,” she said. “In addition to the existing access we have on goods, which is practically the whole universe of goods, we expect the new arrangement to be ambitious on trade in services and cover our service providers. We also want a strong agreement on investment.”

The event is organized with the financial support of the Canada-Americas Trade Related Technical Assistance (CATRTA) programme.
